Baptism A Comprehensive Overview Introduction Baptism is a sacrament that symbolizes the birth of the baptized individual into a new life in Christ, forgiving both original sin and personal sins. It marks the beginning of a journey as adoptive children of God, members of Christ's body, and temples of the Holy Spirit, integrating us into the Church and allowing us to partake in the priesthood of Christ. Liturgy of Baptism The liturgy includes: ○ The presentation of the candidate to the community. ○ The profession of faith. ○ The reception of baptism, which includes: Water symbolizing the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Holy oil (or chrism) symbolizing priestly, kingly, and prophetic missions. White garments symbolizing being clothed in Christ. Did you know? The oil at baptism reminds Catholics of the 3 missions that they try to live throughout their lives: 1. Priest: “uniting themselves with Jesus in the sacrifice of Mass” 2. Prophet: “Witnessing to Jesus in the world by word and example” 3. King: being involved in “building up God’s Kingdom on earth” Graces of Baptism Before we discover the graces of baptism we have to understand what a grace is. In the definition of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, "grace is favour, the free and undeserved help that God gives us to respond to his call to become children of God, adoptive sons, partakers of the divine nature and of eternal life." Baptism gives Catholics the following Graces: Puts one right with God by erasing original sin Shares in God’s eternal life through the Church’s work Intimately connects one to the Trinity ○ One becomes (in a deeply intimate way) adopted child of God ○ Member of Christ’s body building God’s Kingdom on Earth ○ A temple of the Spirit, which opens one to receive the gifts and fruits of the Spirit In the Catechism of the Catholic Church, baptism is described as God's most beautiful gift, bestowing grace, anointing, enlightenment, and sealing individuals as members of Christ's body, the Church. Symbolism of Baptism Baptism symbolizes death and resurrection, with water representing both spiritual death and rebirth, and it signifies the forgiveness of sins.
