In this lesson, we’ll review the commonly used editions of Windows 10. These include the Home, Pro, Pro for Workstations, and Enterprise editions. These are all intended for different situations, so let’s delve deeper into each one. Home Edition 0:17-0:48 Windows 10 Home edition, as the name indicates, is intended for use on a home computer—generally someone with only one computer that only needs the basic features. These include safety features like device encryption, firewall and network protection, Windows Defender Antivirus, and Windows Hello. Home edition also includes some fundamental features like Battery Saver Mode, which can limit background activity to extend battery life, and mobile functionality that allows the user’s Android or iPhone to connect for integrated messaging, calendar, and browsing experiences. Pro Edition 0:49-1:36 Next is the Windows 10 Pro edition. This one is intended mostly for business professionals. It includes all the features of the Home edition, but it also comes with more tools for business environments—things like Remote Desktop, Group Policy Management, BitLocker, Hyper-V, and support for Active Directory. Remote Desktop lets you take control of another workstation remotely over a network connection. Group Policy Management is an administrative tool used to apply security access throughout an organization. BitLocker is Windows’ encryption tool for data protection that can encrypt entire hard drives. Hyper-V is a feature that allows you to create multiple virtual machines on Windows—each running its own OS. And Active Directory is a program that you can download for use in combination with Windows Server to manage user accounts, groups, and security policies. Pro for Workstations Edition 1:37-2:29 Now let’s look at Windows 10 Pro for Workstations. This edition is designed to be used only on high-end hardware. It doubles the CPU capacity of Windows 10 Pro from 2 to 4 CPUs. It also has the capacity for 6 TB of RAM, which makes it ideal for intensive computing needs. Pro for Workstations also supports extra features like Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron, and persistent memory. Intel Xeon is a high-powered processor that supports memory correction and error checking. AMD Opteron is another high-powered processor that can increase performance for users that need speed and reliability. Persistent memory is a non-volatile memory technology. This means that, unlike RAM, power cycles are used to retain data in memory even during an unexpected shutdown. These features are intended for use in fields like engineering, medicine, and science. Enterprise Edition 2:30-2:59 Finally, let’s review the Enterprise edition. Windows 10 Enterprise is designed for large organizations that have IT professionals managing their systems. Know that this edition requires a volume licensing agreement that’d be impractical for a small company with only a few computers. Enterprise edition includes security features not available in Windows 10 Home or Pro, such as Credential Protection and Device Guard, as well as IT management features like Direct Access and User Experience Control. These offer granular control and added security. Summary 3:00-3:22 That’s it for this lesson. In this lesson, we reviewed the most common editions of Windows 10 and their most basic features. First, we looked at the Home edition, which is intended for home computer use. Then we reviewed the Pro edition, which is designed for business professionals. Next, we talked about Pro for Workstations and its capability for use with high-end, intensive machines. We ended by discussing the Enterprise edition, which is intended mostly for a corporate setting.
