CRITICAL READING: CORNELL NOTES Ethics in Qualitative Research Name: Date: 5 August 2023 Section: Lecture 4 Period: Questions/Main Ideas/Vocabulary Notes/Answers/Definitions/Examples/Sentences Ethics in Qualitative Research Ethical protocols in qualitative research need to take into consideration issues pertaining to: Small sample sizes (including limits of anonymity/confidentiality). The interaction between researchers and participants. Vulnerable populations that are frequently the research focus. The subjective nature of the analytic process. The use of naturally occurring data. Interviews, Focus Groups & Community-Based Research When qualitative researchers conduct interviews or focus groups, they often enter into a more personal interaction with participants than researchers who rely on survey data, or conduct experiments, or use naturally occurring online data. Key Ethical Considerations Relevant for Qualitative Research Informed consent (including withdrawal). Confidentiality and privacy. Research with vulnerable groups and Australian Indigenous populations. Reflexivity. That is, researchers must reflect back on their process and any assumptions or personal beliefs that could impact on the way they conduct the research and be aware of the power relationship they have entered into with participants. Internet-Mediated Research Qualitative researchers using internet-mediated data (e.g., social media, online forums, or other online data) must adhere to a number of ethical principles recently set out in the Ethics Guidelines for Internet-mediated research by the British Psychological Society. These principles specifically cover issues associated with using online data, and include: Respect for the autonomy, privacy and dignity of individuals and communities. Privacy online. Valid consent. Deception. Withdrawal. Scientific integrity. Levels of control. Social responsibility. Maximising benefits and minimising harm.
