DIETARY REQUIREMEN TS ABDUL RAIMI BIN ABD.KADIR HMD 10502 Professional Practice and Patient Care 1 Today, nutritionists have a wide knowledge of the role of nutrients in health and disease. We know that people need many different nutrients if WHAT ARE they are to maintain health and reduce the risk of NUTRITIONAL diet-related diseases. REQUIREMENTS The amount of each nutrient needed is called the ? nutritional requirement. These are different for each nutrient and also vary between individuals and life stages, e.g. women of childbearing age need more iron than men. 2 Each nutrient has a particular series of functions in the body and some nutrients are needed in larger quantities than others. For example, protein is needed in gram (g) quantities. Vitamin C is needed in milligram (mg) quantities WHY DO (1/1000 gram) and vitamin B12 is needed in NUTRITIONAL microgram (µg) quantities (1/1000000 gram). REQUIREMENTS Individual requirements of each nutrient are related to VARY? a person’s age, gender, level of physical activity and state of health. Also, some people absorb or utilise nutrients less efficiently than others and so will have higher than average nutritional requirements, e.g. among older people, vitamin B12 absorption can be relatively poor. 3 The dietary guidelines were developed by a Technical MALAYSIAN Working Group on Nutritional Guidelines, part of the DIETARY National Coordinating Committee for Food and Nutrition, Ministry of Health Malaysia. GUIDELINES. The guidelines are endorsed by the Ministry of Health. 4 INTENDED The guidelines are directed at the general public over AUDIENCE 2 years of age. 5 The malaysian food pyramid is divided into four levels corresponding to six food groups. At the base there are rice, cereals, noodles and tubers, to be eaten moderately FOOD On the second layer vegetables and fruits to be eaten GUIDE in abundance Animal source foods and legumes are recommended to be eaten in moderation Fats, sugar and salt to be eaten in smaller quantities. 6 Malaysia food pyramid 7 BALANCED DIET Malaysian healthy plate 8 9 10 Eat a variety of foods within your recommended intake. Maintain body weight within a healthy range. Messages Be physically active every day. by MOH Eat adequate amounts of rice, other cereal products (preferably wholegrain) and tubers. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day. 11 Consume moderate amounts of fish, meat, poultry, eggs, legumes and nuts. Consume adequate amounts of milk and milk products. Messages Limit intake of foods high in fats and minimize fats by MOH and oils in food preparation. Choose and prepare foods with less salt and sauces. Consume foods and beverages low in sugar. Drink plenty of water daily. 12 Practice exclusive breastfeeding from birth until 6 months and continue to breastfeed until 2 years of Messages age.
