8th grade The Revolutionar y Era 3.2 Growing Resentment Against the British 01 Proclamatio n of 1763 Date Enacted: 1763 Description: Imaginary boundary line along the Appalachian Mountains. Colonists were forbidden from settling west of the line. Meant to protect British settlers in the western lands. Proclamation of 1763 British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: Many thought it was unjust and that the British gov’t had no right to tell them where they could settle. Many also believed they had a right to the land after winning the French & Indian War 02 Mercantilism Date Enacted: After the 7 Years War Description: Colonies were expected to serve the colonial power and colonists would not oppose small tax increases. British Action: neither Colonial Reaction: Colonists strongly resisted taxes, argued that it limited trade and made goods more expensive. Also argued that English Constitution did not give the power to raise new taxes 03 The Sugar Act Date Enacted: 1764 Description: Put a new tax on molasses that was lower than a previous tax in order to try and limit smuggling while making it easier to punish those who were caught smuggling. British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: most colonists avoided the tax by smuggling and bribing 04 The Stamp Act Date Enacted: 1765 Description: Placed new taxes on items like wills, legal documents, newspapers, playing cards and required a stamp to show that the tax had been paid. British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: Angry protests by the colonists including throwing rocks at public officials, looting the home of a Lieutenant Governor. Riots broke out in Boston, New York City, 05 No Taxation without Representation Date Enacted: – Description: The idea that the colonists or their elected representatives to Parliament had the right to raise new taxes. British Action: No Colonial Reaction: Many colonists believed in paying taxes but only if they had been passed by their own local legislatures. They also believed that the taxes placed by Parliament only hurt them more by being very restrictive on trade 06 Stamp Act Congress Date Enacted: 1765 Description: 9 of 13 colonies sent delegates to New York to consider what actions should be taken in response to the Stamp Act. British Action: no Colonial Reaction: The delegation drew up a petition in order to peacefully protest the taxes and brought their concerns about Parliament directly to King George III. 07 Declaratory Act Date Enacted: 1766 Description: Parliament in response to the protests of the colonies repealed the Stamp Act but passed a law stating that it had the power to raise taxes if it British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: none 08 Townshend Act Date Enacted: 1767 Description: Taxed items such as glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea. British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: While the taxes were low, many still protested the new taxes under the same principle that Parliament did not have the power to tax the colonies. 09 Writs of Assistance Date Enacted: 1767 Description: A legal document that would allow British officials to inspect a ship’s cargo without a reason British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: The colonists argued that they were British citizens and therefore the government did not have the authority to search a person’s property without a good reason for suspecting that they had committed a crime 10 Sons of Liberty Date Enacted: - Description: A group of colonists formed in Boston that protested British policies. British Action: Colonial Reaction: Staged pretend hangings of straw figures who resembled British officials to show what might happen if they tried to collect taxes 12 Daughters of Liberty Date Enacted: - Description: A group of colonists formed in Boston that protested British policies. British Action: Colonial Reaction: Paraded, signed petitions and called on women to make homespun clothes as a boycott of British produced goods 13 Boston Massacre Date Enacted: 1770 Description: A conflict between the colonists and British soldiers that resulted in the deaths of 5 civilians. The crowd had insulted the soldiers, threw snowballs and British Action: Colonial Reaction: Paul Revere created an engraving showing the British firing on unarmed civilians, Sam Adams wrote letters to try and build outrage. Used the term “massacre” to try and fan anti-British feelings 14 Quartering Act Date Enacted: 1765 Description: Colonists had to provide housing, candles, bedding, and beverages to soldiers stationed in the colonies. British Action: ✔ Colonial Reaction: Many believed that soldiers should not have been stationed in the colonies during peacetime. 15 Committees of Correspondence Date Enacted: 1770 Description: Letter-writing campaign where members wrote letters and pamphlets reporting on events in Massachusetts to the other colonies. British Action: Colonial Reaction: These committees were a major tool of protest and were a way for those in Massachusetts to grow support for their boycotts and spread them across the rest of the colonies.
