Soil Classification Soil profile is a vertical section of general soil through all its layers that extend into its parent material. It is critical to know the difference between horizons Brown Earth Soils have a high PH and are dark in colour. They are found on limestone areas where good drainage occurs. Soil is very fertile in these areas Podzols are one of the world's most acidic soils, mainly found in areas of forestry these areas are prone to leeching Brown Podzolic Soils are closely linked to Podzol however they do not leech as badly. They are mainly used for forestry. Grey-brown Podzolic Soils look like brown earth soils. They are used for crop production or grassland. They have a high PH and are well drained. Gleys Form in waterlogged areas after high rainfall this is known as Gleisation. In these areas there is poor drainage. Mottling can be seen in the blue grey horizon. There are two types of gley soil, Surface water is water found on the upper layer of soil that has not penetrated soil pores. Ground water is water found underground in soil pores and in cracks in rocks.
