01 Perioperative Antibiotics Perioperative Antibiotics Prophylaxis- use of an agent to prevent disease Pro – before Phylax – to guard Perioperative Prophylaxis Antibiotics  Antibiotics given just before surgery (30- 60min) and during surgery (every 90 min) to decrease the chance of post-op infection  Choice of antibiotic depends on the type of bacterial contamination expected  May be discontinued or changed to oral route once procedure is finished Perioperative Antibiotics Indications: Orthopedic surgeries with implants (TPLO, internal fixation, external fixation for repair) Expected contamination during surgery (e.g. rectal surgery, colectomy, gastric resection, FB exploratory) +/- Dental surgical extractions Perioperative Antibiotics Surgery time longer than 90min Patient is already infected (pre- surgery)
