Department of Health Education and Promotion Faculty of Public Health and Tropical Medicine Jazan University, KSA Health Promotion Program Planning & Evaluation 3rd Session Introduction Dr. Yahya Alamir BSN, MAP, PhD ,Assistant Professor Public Health, Social & Behavioral Sciences Introduction to Program Planning & Evaluation Contents Introduction Health promotion planning models Program Evaluation in health promotion Task 2 Introduction It is clear that health promotion can involve a wide range of different interventions to achieve health gain, used either on their own or in combination. Purpose of Health Green and Kreuter (2005) summarize Promotion the purpose of health promotion as: Intervening To reduce, or prevent an increase in, the proportion of the population engaged in negative health behavior or exposed to negative health conditions ,and, Conversely To increase the proportion that exhibits positive health behavior or is exposed to positive health conditions. Bartholomew et al. (2001) note that health promotion programs may be directed at a number of different levels – individual, interpersonal, organizations, community, society and supranational. Based on? Ecological Model Important point: Program planning and evaluation mirrors and complements the research process. Health Promotion Program Planning & Evaluation Health promotion planning and evaluation involves a process of: Assessing, Planning, Implementing and Evaluating interventions that promote population health. Planning/evaluation Overview Planning Models HP Programs Evaluation Models Evaluation HP Programs HP Programs Activities/ Interventions and/or Events that focus on: help individuals make informed decisions about their health. promote environmental changes To achieve specific objectives that will improve the health of individuals as well as, potentially, all individuals at a site. HP Planning Models Planning is a series of decisions, from general and strategic decisions to specific operational details, based on the gathering and analysis of a wide range of information. HP Planning Models Provide : planned, organized, and structured activities/ interventions and/or events over time HP Program The overall purpose of systematic planning is to identify goals and the most effective means of achieving them Effective planning requires anticipation of what will be needed along the way towards achieving the goal. This statement implies that the goal is defined, as are the necessary steps involved in reaching the goal. Perhaps most importantly, it requires an understanding of the steps and how they interrelate. Main/common elements of HPPM HP planning models in general , have common elements, although the elements may have different labels. In fact, all models/programs involve three basic steps: Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation Planning: Planning the program, includes: Conducting a needs assessment of a health problem and its related factors and influences, Prioritizing actions, Selecting interventions, and Making decisions to create and develop the program Then Implementation of the program interventions and activities. Evaluation of the program to determine whether it has been implemented as planned and whether it has actually affected the health problem or related factors (identified in assessment) that it was intended to affect. Models The most common models that are used by health promotion professionals: the PRECEDE-PROCEED Model, (PPM) Intervention Mapping (IM), Social Marketing. Share the three basic elements of planning, implementation, and evaluation. Keep in mind Health Promotion theories and planning models have been developed and tested to guide professionals in the development of health promotion programs. Consider Program staff members, stakeholders, and participants need to consider the: setting, population, behavior, their desired level of influence, and practical issues such as resources when planning health promotion .programs Evaluation At its simplest, the purpose of evaluation is to assess the extent to which interventions have achieved their goals. Evaluation is a key element of good health promotion practice and an essential component of the health promotion planning cycle Program evaluation is the systematic collection of information about a health promotion program in order to answer questions and make decisions about the program. Evaluation is not a one -time but, ideally, an ongoing process Task 2- Class work Based on Your previous activity: The Identified target population…. The Identified Health issues…. Make a list of behavioral issues related to the identified health issues/ common in your target population, and select only one of them Due to Now Write down for your assignment Thanks Good Luck
