Discuss the different ways a person's verbal and non-verbal dimensions can Intended Learning Outcome affect communication through a short narrated roleplay. Duration 180 minutes Lead-in: Inside Out INSTRUCTIONS: In your columns, sit in a circle with your groupmates. Agree within the group which emotion you would like to represent (listed on the right of the screen). Discuss the guide questions in the next slide with your members. A random person from the group will be chosen to share the group consensus, so cooperate! Other groups can refute statements of the presenting group. ○ Remember to make declarative sentences, and speak politely! Processing Questions: Why did the group choose this emotion? How can you relate this to your personal life? What do you think are the good attributes of your chosen emotion? What do you think are the downsides of that emotion? How can you overcome those downsides? If you were to give some advice to another emotion, what would it be? (only 1 emotion) Do you think acknowledging other person's feelings/ emotions can lead to creating better relations with others? 1 Basic Education Department Senior High School There are two dimensions of communication, and we are pretty familiar with what they are and even use it in real life to communicate. When we use our words, be it using our mouth or in writing, this is considered verbal communication. We are more explicit, and the way we use our words is a large aspect of verbal communication. Things like body language, gestures, facial expressions, and even the way we dress is also a dimension of communication! This is called non-verbal communication. These aspects are not outright explicitly stated, but they still augment the way we communicate, and sometimes it is used because it sends messages that are trickier to verbalize. In daily life, when people communicate, only 35% is verbal. The other 65% is through non-verbal means. Dimensions: Verbal Communication. There are two sub-dimensions when it comes to verbal communication: the spoken, and the transcription of thoughts and ideas. When we participate in conversations, make speeches, even talk on the phone, these are considered spoken verbal communication. However, sending people snappy texts or taking the time to write a sweet letter falls under written verbal communication. Register. Communication is also affected by the level of formality of the setting, and how we present ourselves in these situations. We cannot just barge into a black tie event in jean shorts and a hoodie and think that is appropriate, just as we cannot turn up at Sugbo Mercado in a tuxedo or ball gown. The same goes when we are using language. Estimating the required level of formality helps us fit in and show respect to the people around us. This is what we call 'register'. 2 Basic Education Department Senior High School When the scene calls for a meticulous observation of appropriateness when it comes to language, like writing an apology letter to the principal for your absence or an application letter for university, this is considered the formal register. On the other hand, in a situation that is more casual where formalities are not strictly observed (or even laughable), you might need to use the informal register. Intention. Sometimes we say things we don't mean. While a usual occurrence, it's still not desirable. A speaker might not be aware of the unintended meaning of a message they sent out and only realize the issue once they receive feedback: in worst-case scenarios, someone's expression falls, or they scoff, or they even walk out on you for saying something like that. Be careful with your words and be intentional with them, and reread a message before you hit 'send', just in case you might unintentionally upset someone. Dimensions: Non-Verbal Communication. "Actions speak louder than words," the old adage goes. As mentioned in the previous page, non-verbal communication is a dimension of communication that has nothing to do with the way we use our words. It is more of how we act and present ourselves in situations. Aspects like our facial expressions, tone of voice, and body language send waves of communication louder than words. We need to be careful not just with our words but with the way we act, as well, because these are also powerful tools of communication that might, in some cases, be more brutal than our words could be. Non-Verbal Communication: Paralanguage. Paralanguage is not what is said, but how it was said. The manner of speech, our tone and intonations, voice, volume, and even hesitation and physical items like gifts convey messages that go beyond words. Some examples of paralanguage are listed below: Sarcasm is a form of paralanguage. We say one thing, but we really mean the opposite. Giving flowers. Universally, red roses symbolize love. White lilies in most European countries are exclusively for funerals and wakes. In Italy, 3 Basic Education Department Senior High School chrysanthemums are given to people you have affection for, which would be awkward to do in the Philippines as this flower is usually displayed in tombs in cemeteries. Colors. Most fastfood/regular restaurants are painted in the colors of the sunset, i.e. yellow, orange, red, as these increase appetite. Hospital interiors/wards usually are painted in pastel pink or purple, powder blue as these colors are thought to calm people. Black is the color of mourning. In most Asian monarchies, yellow is the royal color such as the royal family of Thailand. In Singapore, white tents signal that there is a wedding, while yellow tents signal that there is a funeral. Non-Verbal Communication: Chronemics. In the movie "Princess Diaries 2", Queen Clarisse says, "The Queen is never late. Everyone else is simply early." This is a display of authority and power. The most important person in an event, the guest of honor, arrives last to signify their authority. This is chronemics in action: the study of the relationship between time and communication (Ballard, n.d.). The way we perceive and react to time is connected to the way we humans communicate, especially when it comes to positions or power. Non-Verbal Communication: Proxemics. Have you ever been in a conversation with someone you just met but you just feel like they're a little too close to your face? It's kind of uncomfortable how they're feeling close - both literally and metaphorically. This discomfort is proxemics at play. According to Danesi (2006), proxemics is the "study of personal space and the degree of separation that individuals maintain between each other in social situations." Every individual, be it human or animal, has a general radius of personal space, and depending on the person and their level of closeness, has an allocated acceptable space within that radius. PUBLIC SPACE 4 SOCIAL SPACE PERSONAL SPACE Basic Education Department Senior High School Think about it. In your notebook, tell us: who do you think you can let in your proxemic circles? List down these people. Non-Verbal Communication: Haptics. Haptics are the use of touch to express what cannot be said: A kiss on a hand for lovers, best friends giving a tight hug, handshake to affirm agreement or a deal, wife asking favor from a husband by way of a shoulder massage. There are many ways to convey our messages through the use of haptics. However, be careful when touching other people. There might be differences in culture or gender that can unintentionally send a different message or offend someone even if we don't mean to do so. Non-Verbal Communication: Gestures. The way we move our hands and head while speaking also holds a lot of communicative meaning. Gestures are the most popular type of non-verbal communication, and there are four types: emphasizing - to punctuate what one wants to highlight in a message regulating - used to control the flow of communication. Actions like nodding for 'yes' and shaking the head to say 'no', and rolling eyes to express distaste helps control the conversation and the direction is heading towards. illustrating - pinching the air to illustrate size of a handheld item, using both hands to demonstrate the height or distance. 5 Basic Education Department Senior High School emblems - gestures associated with specific meaning, like putting your hand on the chest during the national anthem or putting your hand up during the national pledge. Non-Verbal Communication: Facial Expressions. Facial expressions are the way our face moves to convey our emotional states without having to verbally (and sometimes violently) express them. There are many different emotions that we can feel and have the ability to convey through our face, but there are seven basic expressions that we use usually in everyday interactions. Non-Verbal Communication: Personal Appearance. Personal appearance is a type of non- verbal communication where an individual decorates or modifies their physical body to communicate meaning to others. Other than our OOTD (outfit of the day), tattoos, hairstyles, and jewelry also help express our personality and viewpoints on society. Culture also plays a role in how personal appearance is interpreted. In Japan, it is offensive to leave the house with wet hair, while in the Philippines we do not care much about it. Consider various dress codes: semi-formal, smart casual, business attire, formal, black tie, rugged, and cocktail. At which events is one expected to wear them? What about uniforms—why are students wearing them? What kind of message does wearing a uniform convey? 6 Basic Education Department Senior High School Non-Verbal Communication: Silence. Giving someone the silent treatment may seem like a lack of communication, but you would be surprised to find that it is also considered a form of non-verbal communication too! Depending on the culture, the way silence is interpreted varies greatly. In the Philippines, silence is extremely powerful because it is a sign that a person may be refusing to engage in communication, which effectively renders communication useless. In countries like the U.S. silence can also be used as a form of protest, like the Day of Silence. In Japan, silence is the highest form of respect a student can give a teacher.
