# How do we find out about how people lived long ago? Archaeologists study how people lived in the past. They look for remains of buildings, human and animal bones, and objects left behind by people (artefacts). Examples of artefacts include pots, tools, and jewellery. These artefacts can tell us a lot about how people lived and what they thought was important. It's not always easy to understand what artefacts mean. Often, artefacts are broken, and buildings that once existed are in ruins. Archaeologists try to piece together information from the remaining artefacts to understand how people lived in the past. Artefacts made of stone or metal survive better than those made of straw or wood, which usually decay. # Mapungubwe Mapungubwe was a large kingdom with a political hierarchy and a trade network that covered most of today's Botswana, Zimbabwe, Southern Mozambique, and the northern provinces of South Africa. The kingdom existed around 800 years ago at the archeological site in present-day Limpopo. Trade links extended across the Indian Ocean to the Middle East and India. # Artefacts Some of the artefacts found at Mapungubwe. [Image Description: Image shows several earthenware pots of various shapes and slightly different colours.
