Benefits of Remote Working Flexible schedule Working from any location No commute More time with family Challenges of Remote Working for Workers Poor collaboration and communication Loneliness Difficulty in Unplugging after work Distractions at home Difficulty staying motivated Need a stable Wi-Fi Could have different time zones Challenges for Mangers Reduced employee focus Maintaining company culture Reduced employee productivity Employees overworking Employees career implication Reduced team cohesiveness Security Risk Assessment Employee related Lack of concentration phishing attacks Increased level stress/anxiety/ burnout leads to poorer security Sending an email to the wrong person with strict information. Social engineering/ Phishing due to lack of attention, willingness to trust, willingness to be kind, urgency or importance, high stress. Anxious. Employees with minimal monitoring may steal confidential information Trusted/untrusted people nearby may exploit and access cooperate data/services Technology related Lack of proficiency in remote working technology , caused burden for people to learn how to use them which was time consuming Remote communication technology can expose organisation to increased risk such as an incident where Gatecrashing a conference from unwanted person / unauthorized person Employees returning to work after remotely working may bring infected devices into corporate network Work devices could be used as personal devices as well such as watching films of illegal websites could harm the device. Security for organisation vs Privacy for employee Privacy risks for employees Monitoring keystrokes on screens and websites visited which invades privacy for the worker. May be using the business devices to access their personal emails therefore giving the companies lots of personal information about them selves. Exposure of personal information such as exposing home using webcams, posting photos online of home offices. Solutions? From employee perspective: be aware of how your employer is tracking you or using your personal data. You can ask whether you are being monitored at work, what information is collected. Employer Perspective: Organisations can only address their risks if they know what they are and their nature. Remote working is likely here to stay, accept it and conduct a holistic assessment of the cyber security risks that you and your enterprise are facing – this involves the HR Team, IT/Security Team and others. Those looking to harm the organisation – be they external or internal – are a dynamic threat. As such your response needs to be dynamic, and adaptive; security is not a static state. Technology alone will not solve a business’ security problems, policy, process and people are important as well. There is a balance in security and privacy. If the organisation does not understand this, they may lose good employees who refuse to be excessively monitored
