SWAT MEDIC PROCEDURES ACTIVATION Procedure for activation of on-duty Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Medics for a SWAT mission: 1. When SWAT medics are needed for a mission, the Miami Police Department (MPD) SWAT Commander or his designee will contact the Fire Central Information Office (FCIO) (305-579-6245), at the Fire-Rescue Department Alarm Office with the request 2. FCIO will obtain from the MPD SWAT Commander, or his designee, mission information including: a. Meeting place b. Start time c. Expected duration d. Contact number (in case further information is needed 3. An up-to-date List of Active SWAT Medics is maintained by the Miami Fire-Rescue SWAT Medic Commander and available on the FireNet (found under the “Personnel” tab) 4. FCIO will contact the Battalion Chief to make arrangements to have SWAT Medics assigned to the mission 5. If the Battalion Chief decides that the assignment of SWAT Medics to a mission will significantly impede ongoing Fire-Rescue Department operations, a stand-by rescue will be assigned in lieu of SWAT Medics. a. The Battalion Chief will follow-up with an e-mail to the SWAT Medic Commander informing him of the circumstances 6. A minimum of two (2) SWAT Medics and a driver (driver does not need to be a SWAT Medic) are required for a SWAT mission. a. If 2 SWAT Medics are NOT available for a mission, then an on-duty stand-by Rescue will be dispatched for the mission. b. If there is a single SWAT Medic on a stand-by Rescue, he/she will NOT, in any way, act in the capacity of a SWAT Medic on the mission, but only as a member of the stand-by Rescue crew. 7. The on-duty SWAT Medics, activated for a mission, will be transported to MPD or the designated meeting place, by a Rescue unit a. At no time are the SWAT Medics to use their personal vehicles 8. One (1) Rescue apparatus with a driver, as mentioned in #6 above, will be required to remain with the SWAT Medics for assignment on the mission. a. The driver will be: • given a handie-talkie radio for communication • Briefed by the SWAT Medic Incident Commander (IC) as to his/her responsibilities 9. At no time is the Rescue apparatus to be used as alternate or additional transportation for the Police SWAT Team and it should remain away from the mission location until such time as the scene is secured 10. The remaining crew member of the Rescue assigned to the mission will combine with the crew of the other Rescue and return to service for the duration of the mission. 11. The SWAT Medic IC (if neither SWAT Medic is an officer, the Senior Medic shall act as the Edited: 1/13/09 IC) will: a. Request an alarm number from the Alarm Office, reference SWAT standby b. Be responsible for the completion of the IRS report • Even if the only action was to stand-by 12. The Alarm Office will assign the SWAT Rescue unit designation SMR, using the situation code 882, and show the unit on the scene 13.
