Literature A broad term used to refer to written works, such as books, magazines, short stories, plays, and poems. A literature can be in oral or written form. The term literature is derived from the Latin word ‘‘litter/littera’’ which means a letter to the alphabet. Literature can either be in oral or written form. Prose – Typically consists of sentences and paragraphs and is used for a variety of genres, including novels, essays, short stories, and news paper articles. Is a form of language that uses ordinary language and has a natural flow. It is typically consists of sentences and paragraphs. Poetry – A genre of literature that uses imaginative and often rhythmic language to express an idea, express emotion, or tell a story. Fiction – Any story that is created from the author’s imagination, as opposed to being based on facts or real events. Non- Fiction – A genre which encompasses essays, biographies, memoirs, and other written works that are based on facts and real events. Novel – Usually have multiple chapters, with a large plot and focus on character development. Biography – A biography is a detailed description or account of a person’s life. It includes facts and information about the person’s childhood, education, family, work, and death. Narrative poetry – Is a form of poetry that tells a story. It usually follows a plot with characters, a setting, and a climax. Metric tale – A short story told in verse, usually composed of stanzas or lines of poetry. Pre- Spanish period – Oral tradition is the form of literature during this period. Fantastic stories- Deal with underworld characters such as tiyanak, aswang, kapre, and others. Senakulo – dramatization of pasyon, it shows the passion and death of Christ. Period of Enlightenment – language shifted from Spanish to Tagalog Japanese Period – Philippine literature in English came to a halt. 21st Century – New trends have been used and introduced to meet the needs and tastes of the new generation.
