HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: RESPONSE GUIDELINES – 021 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Inside Odor Investigation (ODOR) Revision: 8 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE The purpose of this guideline is to provide standardized and predetermined responses to all incidents classified as an Inside Odor Investigation (ODOR) by Northwest Central Dispatch (NWCD). POLICY It shall be the policy of the Hoffman Estates Fire Department to follow this guideline. However, it may be altered to achieve a more appropriate response based on information received from NWCD or to achieve a faster response based on location and/or status of fire department apparatus and personnel. NWCD will attempt to gather the following information at the time of the original call for assistance: 1. If anyone needs medical assistance. 2. Ask caller to have everyone evacuate the structure and to not leave doors or windows open. 3. Instruct occupants who cannot evacuate to open a window and stay close to fresh air. PROCEDURE A. For a reported Inside Odor Investigation, the still district or closest engine, the still district or closest ambulance, Tower 22 (Squad 22 if Tower 22 is unavailable) and Battalion 6 will respond. B. If Command desires to upgrade the incident to a fire incident, NWCD will balance the call to a Code 3 response. C. If Command desires to upgrade the incident to a hazardous materials incident, NWCD will balance the call to a HAZMAT 1 response. 1 DEFINITIONS An Inside Odor Investigation is defined as any non-medical situation that involves an odor investigation inside a building or structure with no visible smoke or fire. Examples include the smell of smoke inside, the smell of electrical burning, an unidentified odor and a smell of gas inside a building. If there is a known gas main break resulting in gas leaking inside the building or if there is visible smoke or haze classify as Code 3. EXCEPTIONS Where MABAS Illinois Policies and Procedures current online reference or MABAS 1 Operating Guidelines/Policy Statements are in conflict with HEFD Standard Operating Guidelines, HEFD Standard Operating Guidelines will take precedence.
