STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES SECTION: 200.00 / Rules & Regulations Guideline: 217.00 Sick Leave Effective Date: Revision Date: 01/2024 217.00 General Provisions The accrual, accumulation, and use of sick leave shall be in conformance with the City of DeSoto Personnel Policies and Procedures manual. Sick leave may be taken when the member is unable to perform the duties assigned due to sickness. Members are prohibited from working their part-time employment while on sick or injury leave on the day of their regular scheduled shift. Additionally, members will not be allowed Overtime, Training, or Department functions until that member has physically returned for one regularly scheduled 24-hour shift. Members may report their sick leave request via PACE as soon as they realize they will not be at their next scheduled Shift but no later than 0630 on the morning of their shift. All Employees will be allowed two (2) events off being Sick without Documentation in a calendar year, beginning on January 1 through December 31st. A Chief Officer can ask for a doctor’s excuse at any time they deem necessary. When sick time is reported, all that is necessary is to indicate “Sick” in the notes. An Event can encompass more than 1 shift. For Example, if you have the flu and it takes you three shifts to recover. Assuming you do not return with a doctor’s note, then this counts as only 1 event. After two events are used, all subsequent sick time will require a Doctor’s excuse. Without this excuse, the sick time will be considered as abuse of sick time, and will be disciplined accordingly. The only exception is a death in the family that extends past the 1.5 shifts of Bereavement leave given by the City. If additional time is needed during a death event, sick time can be used with Bereavement leave and will not count against this individual. This does not require any type of documentation. At any time, when calling in sick, if you procure a doctor’s excuse, this will not count as one of your two events for the year. All Sick documentation will be forwarded to admin and placed in the employee’s personnel file for record keeping. An employee who becomes ill or injured while on vacation or holiday leave, may request that the vacation or holiday be terminated and the time of illness or injury be charged to sick leave. Abuse of sick leave privileges is sufficient reason for discipline, up to and including indefinite suspension. Firefighter members will report “off sick” via PACE and submit to ALL Supervisors. Sick leave is accrued at the rate of 1.25 days per month of service (15 days per year). This benefit may be used after the completion of six months of full-time service.
