Abdominal aorta Beginning Continuation of descending thoracic aorta at the level of T12 Termination At L4 level, it bifurcate giving 2 common iliac Branches: Single branches: Coeliac Trunk arises opposite upper border of L1 Superior mesenteric arises opposite lower border of L1 Inferior mesenteric arises opposite L3 Median Sacral arises opposite L4 Paired branches: Inferior phrenic arises opposite upper border of L1 Middle suprarenal arises opposite lower border of L1 Renal & gonadal arteries arise opposite L2 Common iliac arteries arise opposite L4 Upper 4 lumbar arteries arise opposite each lumbar vertebrae N.B: Median Sacral is the only branch from back of aorta N.B: Last lumbar artery from median sacral artery Anatomist “abdominal aorta – IVC – internal iliac artery” Inferior vena cava Beginning: Union of 2 Common iliac at level of L5 Termination: Open in right atrium at level of 6th costal cartilage “T8” Tributaries: Hepatic veins: at T8 level. Inferior phrenic veins: at L1 level. Right suprarenal vein: at L1 level Renal veins: at L2 level Right gonadal vein: at L3 level 3rd & 4th lumbar veins: at L3 &L4 level Common iliac veins: at L5 level N.B: 1st & 2nd lumbar veins form Ascending Lumbar N.B: Median sacral vein drain into left common iliac vein N.B: left Gonadal & left suprarenal & left inferior phrenic drain into left renal vein Anatomist “abdominal aorta – IVC – internal iliac artery” Internal iliac artery o Origin: terminal branch of common iliac at sacroiliac joint o Branches Posterior division: all branches are parietal A. Ilio-lumbar: gives iliac & lumbar branches B. Lateral sacral: to supply content of sacral canal C. Superior gluteal: continuation of posterior division to supply gluteal region Anterior division: all branches are visceral except 1 & 6 & 7 1. Obturator: to thigh 2. Umbilical artery: Gives superior vesical branch to urinary bladder Distal part obliterates to form lateral umbilical ligament 3. Vaginal artery (in female): Supply urinary bladder, vagina Inferior vesical (in male): Supply urinary bladder, seminal vesicle & vas defference 4. Uterine artery (in female only): Supply uterus, uterine tube & vagina 5. Middle rectal: Supply rectum, vagina in female & Supply rectum, seminal vesicle & prostate in male 6. Inferior gluteal: terminal branch of anterior division of internal iliac 7. Internal pudendal: terminal branch of anterior division of internal iliac N.B: Bilateral vaginal arteries unite together at anterior & posterior walls of vagina forming azygos artery.
