Prof. Pharmacology & Therapeutics drugs Used in Anemias & Hematopoietic Growth Factors  Introduction ❑ Hematopoiesis ▪ The production of circulating erythrocytes, leukocytes & platelets from undifferentiated stem cells. ▪ Requires a constant supply of 3 essential nutrients (iron, vit B12, & folic acid) & hematopoietic growth factors (e.g., erythropoietin & colony- stimulating factors) ▪ Inadequate supplies of either the essential nutrients/or the growth factors → deficiency of functional blood cells  Anaemia ❑ Definition: ▪ Defined as a low hemoglobin (Hb) concentration d/t ↓production /or ↑ loss of RBC ▪ The WHO defines anaemia as Hb 1 g/dL over a 2-week & not exceed 12 g/dL. ❑ One of the drugs banned by the International Olympic Committee d/t ↑RBC concentration →↑ oxygen delivery → improve performance  THE END Questions ?
