# Safety Procedures for Working with Chemicals This document outlines safety procedures for working with chemicals. ## Safety Equipment * **Broken glass bin:** Used for discarding broken glass. * **Safety Shower:** Used for rinsing chemicals from the body. * **Eye Wash Station:** Used for rinsing chemicals from the eyes. ## General Safety Procedures * **Contact with Chemicals:** If any part of your body comes into contact with a chemical, immediately wash the affected area thoroughly with water. * **Eye Contact:** If a chemical gets in your eyes, do not rub them; immediately flush them with water for at least 15 minutes and tell your teacher or supervisor. * **Handling Chemicals:** Always handle substances carefully. * **Smelling Chemicals:** If you are asked to smell a chemical substance, never wave the substance under your nose directly. Instead, hold the container slightly over the opening and cautiously inhale the substance with your nose from the opening with your hands beneath the opening to gently direct the fumes to your nose. * **Chemical Spills:** If you have a big chemical spill on your body, use the safety shower immediately to rinse the chemical from your skin. * **Waste Disposal:** Dispose of materials as directed by your teacher. Never pour chemicals down the drain or throw them in the regular trash unless instructed. * **Classroom Procedures:** Shut off all gas in the classroom, and use the designated area to discard used materials.
