HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: Equipment Guidelines – 001 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Opticoms or Traffic Preemption Devices Revision: 2 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 1 PURPOSE All emergency response apparatus are equipped with Opticoms. These traffic preemption devices are to be activated only when the vehicle's emergency lights are in use. POLICY Currently, not all of the intersections with Opticom receivers are equipped with confirmation beacons. If an intersection is equipped with a confirmation beacon, the white beacon light will flash whenever the intersection is controlled by a vehicle's Opticom traveling in that specific direction of travel (along with the direction immediately opposite). When one beacon light flashes, the other two beacon lights directly to the right and left hold a solid beam. The solid beam indicates that the Opticom will not activate the receiver in that direction of travel. (Someone else has control of the traffic signal.) Whenever an Opticom is controlling an intersection, all personnel are still responsible to comply “Safety Operations Policy 4, “Passenger and Driver Safety” and the Illinois Vehicle Code.
