HOFFMAN ESTATES FIRE DEPARTMENT STANDARD OPERATING GUIDELINES SOG Category & Identification Number: EFFECTIVE DATE: EQUIPMENT GUIDELINES – 019 January 1, 2022 NIMS COMPLIANT SOG Title: Pet O2 Delivery Masks Revision: 5 APPROVED BY: NUMBER OF PAGES: Re-evaluation Date: Alan Wax January 1, 2026 Fire Chief 2 PURPOSE This guideline covers equipment to be carried on the frontline ambulances to be used by all personnel assigned to these apparatus. The (SurgiVet) Pet O2 mask is designed for use on all sized and types of domestic animals suffering from suspected oxygen depletion or hypoxia. The (SurgiVet) Pet O2 Mask can be used as a first response by rescue personnel during pet rescue in a drowning or near drowning situation, smoke inhalation situation or confined space with an IDLH atmosphere. DEFINITIONS Large Canine mask: 5.0 to 7.0 liter O2 Small Canine mask: 3.0 to 5.0 liter O2 Feline mask: 1.0 to 3.0 liter O2 Oxygen Tubing: attaches mask to oxygen source POLICY Whenever a domestic animal is rescued from a structure fire, body of water or confined space with oxygen depletion that has sustained a possible injury due to smoke inhalation, drowning or suffocation, treatment should include the use of a properly sized (SurgiVet) Pet O2 Mask. 1 PROCEDURE The following steps are to be followed to properly administer oxygen to an animal in need of oxygen administration. A. Attach the (SurgiVet) Pet O2 Mask to the oxygen tubing and then attach the oxygen tubing to an oxygen source. B. Place the proper sized (SurgiVet) Pet O2 Mask over the snout of the animal in need and adjust the oxygen flow needed for the size mask. Large Canine mask should be set to flow 5.0 to 7.0 liters of O2 Small Canine mask should be set to flow 3.0 to 5.0 liters of O2 Feline mask should be set to flow: 1.0 to 3.0 liters of O2 C. Disposition of the animal will be the responsibility of the pet owner. Ambulances will not be utilized for this transport purpose. This section does not apply to a police dog injured in the line of duty. (See NWC A-3 Section V) D. The Masks are non-disposable and cleaning instructions are kept with each kit. Do Not Autoclave!
