In Class Review Stages of Reintegration: Learning, Understanding, Accepting Historical Context: It mirrors the fact that the world is dominated by three superpowers in World War 2. Big brother has a mustache, he is a youngish man, strong, physically built, and attractive. At the end of the novel, we discover that Emmanuel Goldstein is created by the party to know who wants to go against the party. Three words not allowed in new speak: Freedom, rebellion, God. The Uniform of the antisex league: overalls with a red sash around the waist The trap he puts to know if someone opens the diary is that he puts dust on it. He is aroused by Julia because he is attracted to the sense of freedom when she takes her clothes off. Paperweight symbolizes how Winston loves the idea of the past High-positioned people of the party can turn off the telescreen and have a lot more privileges like butlers, etc. In torture, Winston says yes to everything that O'Brien says, but he can't betray Julia and he can't say "2+2=5" truthfully. Winston says that before he dies he is going to rebel against the party so they don't win. He dreams about being with Julia in the golden country and being shot in the back of the head. Themes: The effects of Totalitarian a Goverment The purpose of big brother having spies is so that they can indoctrinate them and better control them. The party does not want love in people's lives because it represents freedom and because people would put their significant other above the party. Symbols: big brother, Goldstein, Julia, notebook, pen, paperweight Slogan: War is Peace: When there is war all citizens are united under you and this is how the party maintains control. Ignorance is Strength The less you know the less you have to worry about, its nice of big brother to take the worries away from you. Freedom is Slavery: When you have freedom you are enslaved to the choice. **Important notes** -
