How many times you failed to communicate your message? TELL ME ONE? Introduction The art of Communication is not all natural. We can learn to communicate effectively. Communication is a core clinical skill. Communication skills are not an optional extra; without appropriate communication skills our knowledge and intellectual efforts are easily wasted. Definition of Communication Communication is a dynamic process Communication is the act of sharing and receiving information, ideas, and attitudes from one person to another. The sender is also known as encoder. Communication Elements (cont.) Encoding The act of producing messages. Putting your ideas into sound waves called coding Communication Elements (cont.) 2- Message The message is the basic idea that you want to communicate. This is a very much important component of communication “Your message MUST be clear and easy to understand” Communication Elements (cont.) 3- Channel Channel is the means through which your message reaches the receiver Channel varies from situation to situation. Most Common Ways to Communicate Face to face E-mails letters Telephone Communication Elements (cont.) 4- Receiver (Decoder) To whom the message is being sent. Is the most important element in communication process. Receiver is also known as decoder. Communication Elements (cont.) Decoding The act of receiving messages for example reading or listening Translating sound waves or words on a screen into ideas you take them out of code. Communication Elements (cont.) 5- Feedback Feedback is basically the response/reaction of the receiver after receiving the message. Senders always need feedback to check whether the message is effectively reached or not. Also, the sender needs feedback to examine the success or failure of the message. Communication Elements (cont.) 6- Context All communication takes place in context that has four dimensions: Physical: the place of communication (room or in the street) Social-psychological: tiredness, the status relationship among participants Temporal: time of communication (morning is not always a good time to communicate) Culture: beliefs and values of participants Competent Communicator Communication competence refers both to your knowledge and understanding of how communication works and to your ability to use communication effectively. Characteristics of a Competent Communicator 1- The ability to make reasoned choices 2- The ability to be culturally sensitive 3- The ability to think critically and mindfully 4- The ability to be ethically responsible 5- The ability to be an effective listener Communication In Healthcare Communication is a core clinical skill for all health care providers.
