CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER Objectives Differentiate between homogenous mixture and heterogeneous mixtures. Use properties of matter to identify and separate substances. Apply simple separation techniques such as distillation and chromatography; Differentiate between pure substances and mixtures; Differentiate between elements and compounds. Halo-halo, also spelled haluhalo, Tagalog for "mixed", is a popular cold dessert in the Philippines made up of crushed ice, evaporated milk or coconut milk, and various ingredients including side dishes such as ube jam (ube halaya), sweetened kidney beans or garbanzo beans, coconut strips, sago, gulaman (agar), pinipig, boiled taro or soft yams in cubes, flan, slices or portions of fruit preserves and other root crop preserves. The dessert is topped with a scoop of ube ice cream. It is usually prepared in a tall clear glass and served with a long spoon. Halo-halo is considered to be the unofficial national dessert of the Philippines. How can you differentiate one ingredient from one another? Do all the ingredients have the same properties? When you mix the ingredients, do the ingredients react with one another? Or do the properties of each ingredient remain the same? A mixture is a physical blend of two or more components; each of which retains its own identity and properties. The parts or components of a mixture are a combination of the different properties of the components. For instance, the taste of the halo-halo is a combination of the taste of the different ingredients. Mixture can be classified as heterogeneous mixtures or as homogeneous mixtures. Halo-halo is an example of a heterogeneous mixture. Chicken macaroni soup is also a heterogeneous mixture. Such mixture , in which composition is not uniform throughout, is a heterogeneous mixture. A mixture is said to be homogenous if the substance’s composition is uniform throughout. A homogenous mixture’s components cannot be seen with the naked eye or even under a microscope. A homogenous mixture is something like salt or sugar dissolved in water. The heterogeneous mixture has two or more phases and has a non-uniform composition. It is physically possible to separate it. Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures. These are various ways to separate a mixture depending on the properties of its components. The following are some separation technique: Filtration - is good for separating an insoluble solid from a liquid. For example. Filtration can be done to separate sand (insoluble solid, which does not dissolve in water) from a mixture of sand and water mixture. Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures. These are various ways to separate a mixture depending on the properties of its components. The following are some separation technique: Evaporation - is good for separating a soluble solid from a liquid. For example, copper sulfate crystals can be separated from copper sulfate solution using evaporation. Take note that it is the water, not the solution, that evaporates. Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures. These are various ways to separate a mixture depending on the properties of its components. The following are some separation technique: Chromatography - is good for separating mixtures of dissolved substances that have different colors, such as inks and plant dyes. Some colored substances dissolve in a certain solvent better than others do, so they travel further up the paper through capillary action. Differences in physical properties can be used to separate mixtures. These are various ways to separate a mixture depending on the properties of its components. The following are some separation technique: Simple distillation - is good for separating a volatile liquid from non-volatile substances in a solution. Compounds are substances formed by the chemical combination of two or more elements. Mixtures are substances formed by physically mixing two or more substances
