Lab 3 Tissues and the Cell Cycle (exercises 7-10 in your book) Learning Outcomes: Cell Cycle -Describe the phases and structures of the cell cycle -ID and sketch the phases (stages) -Arrange into a correct sequence a set of models or drawings of cells in various phases of their life cycles The series of changes a cell undergoes from the time it is formed until it divides A newly formed diploid cell (46 chromosomes) grows to a certain size and then: Divides to form two new cells, daughter cells, (46 chromosomes each). Cells replace themselves so they (the daughter cells) do the identical function. Two main phases: Interphase & M phase (AKA mitosis) Interphase: G1: metabolism S: Synthesis G2: division prep Mitosis (PMAT-division of the nucleus): Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Finally Cytokinesis (the splitting-division of the cells cytoplasm) *G0 state: mature cell not dividing- variable time frame PMAT Metaphase: middle Anaphase: apart Draw a circle in your notebook and divide it like this picture. Label: G1 G2 S Mitotic (M) phase Interphase Prophase Anaphase Metaphase Telophase Cytokinesis Draw: As a class Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Cytokinesis 1 person from each of the groups draw this on the board Label: G1 G2 S Mitotic (M) phase Interphase Prophase Anaphase Metaphase Telophase Cytokinesis Assessments: Be able to complete these: p.59 (green box) -Complete A -Complete D, part 1 Break until 11:40 -start microscopes Tissues Learning objectives: -Sketch and label epithelial tissue/connective tissue/muscle & nervous tissue (Ex: 8-10) -Differentiate the major characteristics of each category (how do you tell them apart-what are their features) -Indicate their respective location and function *Tissue: A layer or group of cells similar in size, shape, and function Tissues *Tissue: A layer or group of cells similar in size, shape, and function -Epithelial: Cover the bodys internal and external surfaces and comprise most glands -Connective: Bind and support parts of the body -Muscle: Make movement possible -Nervous: Conduct impulses, aid in coordination and control of body activities Epithelial Tissue - Tightly packed single (simple) to multiple (stratified) layers of cells that form protective barriers. - They anchor to connective tissue using an acellular basement membrane (the underside of this tissue) - Many shapes exist: squamous, cuboidal, and columnar Connective Tissue - Not as close together as epithelial - they bind structures, provide support/protection, fill spaces, store fat, & transport blood cells - Often widely scattered in an abundance of a noncellular extracellular matrix. - Can secrete ground substance (liquid, medium for substance movement) and fibers (collagen and elastin) p. 76 in your lab book Table 9.1 on pg 78 Muscle and Nervous Tissue - Looking for elongated cells aka muscle fibers (these are for contraction and relaxation) - 3 Types: - Skeletal: Voluntary/nuclei/clear striations - Smooth: Involuntary/NOT striated/fusiform shape - Cardiac: Involuntary/striated/intercalated discs (electrical impulses) Nervous Tissue: - consists of two cell types: Neurons and neuroglia - Neurons: cell body, axon, dendrites - Neuroglia: more abundant-no conduction of impulses (supportive and protective) - *Look at fig 10.2 Cheek Cell Experiment! 1. Get a microscope 1pp -Use KimWipes to clean it 2. Read directions carefully. Sign and hand-in the safety sheet BEFORE beginning the lab 3. Follow directions on lab sheet and from the instructor Disposal: *Slides in labeled container back bench *Toothpicks & pipettes & gloves (biohazard bin/orange bag front of room) *Methylene blue waste (container on back lab bench) -Questions about disposal, ask! -Remember to record your observations on your lab sheet -Be cautious with the stain used today. -Leave your microscope out for the next activity Look at & Sketch all slides -Use the circles and cross out the labels in your book to write the name of the slide you are drawing. (start at 4x) -Muscle (all 3 types) -Epithelial (all 3 shapes, at least one stratified) -Onion Tip (look for PMAT) -Connective (blood, elastic, hyaline, tendons, fibro, compact bone- anything else you want to look at) Fill in All Assessment B’s (connective, epithelial, muscle/nervous lab sections-the matching column for each of the 3 sections) Well go over the answers today or next WED Hand in What are the features that enable you to distinguish between the 3 types of muscle tissue you looked at?
