The Beauty of Certainty Suffix -ty STORY TIME + Nothing is of certainty, life can turn upside down in just a second. + I was sure I would never see my dog again. I just finished my school that day and was ready to leave. The buzzing from my phone alerted me. An inexplicable anxiety forced me to pick up the call as soon as I could. It was my father. STORY TIME + "Our house is on fire!" Dad panickedly informed me the bad news. + Oh no, Buddy! I froze in timidity, then I immediately grabbed my jacket and ran out of school. I was in such a hurry that I forgot to close my locker. STORY TIME + Now I was standing outside my house, watching as the firemen tried to put out the flames. The fire was spreading quickly, and the smoke was making it a huge difficulty to breathe. I could barely see the entirety of the house. + I almost cried out. I didn't care about my books, my computer, or anything at all actually. I was only worried about my pet dog, Buddy. He was my only priority. STORY TIME + Suddenly I heard some activity, barking! It was Buddy! He was running towards me through the smoke. I couldn't believe it. He jumped up on me and licked my face. I hugged him tightly. I was so happy. + The firemen came over and patted Buddy on the head. "He's lucky to have got out, let us bring him to safety and check on him," one of them said. + "Yes, he is," I replied with tears of joy as I handed Buddy over. But I knew it wasn't just luck. It was Buddy's loyalty and love for our family that had saved him. It was my first time in London and I wanted to have a valuable authentic experience by living with local people. I found a really nice British guy called James, who lived near the centre of the city. His house looked comfortable, affordable and suitable for me. SHORT STORY TIME! I sent him a message and he replied really quickly, which was remarkable. He said he was going to be busy during the day, but he would be able to go home at about 6 p.m. So I arrived at his house at about 5.45 p.m. and waited outside. And I waited. And I waited. SHORT STORY TIME! At about 7.30 p.m., I sent him another message, ‘hi, James! I'm outside your house.’ No reply. I waited until about 9 p.m. and then I decided to stay at a hostel nearby. The next day, James sent me a message. 'Hi, sorry I wasn't there yesterday. I was watching a football match on TV. Would you like to come to my house tonight?’ I didn't reply. I didn't think it was reasonable or respectable to arrive at someone's house a day late! A word can be separated into different parts, take the alternate spelling of 'publicate' for 'publish’ as it is probably the easiest to understand. INTERESTING KNOWLEDGE The other words are more difficult: ‘Aggregate' does not come from 'ggregate' but from 'greg', meaning a flock or group. It describes something formed by adding together smaller parts. For example, an aggregate of different people can form a crowd. 'Activate' comes from 'act', meaning do something. So to activate means to make something work or operate. 'Certificate' comes from 'certify', meaning to state that something is true or correct. A certificate is a written statement to confirm this. INTERESTING KNOWLEDGE 'Indoctrinate' comes from 'doctrine', meaning a system of ideas or beliefs. To indoctrinate means to teach someone to accept these ideas completely, without questioning them. 'Decimate' comes from 'decem', meaning ten. In ancient Rome, it meant to kill every tenth soldier as a punishment. Today, it means to kill or destroy a large proportion of something. INTERESTING KNOWLEDGE 'Liberate' comes from 'liber', meaning free. It means to set someone free from a situation, especially a political one. 'Motivate' comes from 'movere', meaning move. To motivate someone means to give them a reason to do something. 'Situate' comes from 'situs', meaning position. We use it to describe where something is located. -ate 使其擁有某項特質 動詞化 擁有某項特質 名詞化/形容詞化 WORD LIST Graduate = grad + ate = v. 畢業 / n. 畢業生 Separate = se + para + ate = v. 分隔;阻隔 / adj. 分隔獨立的 Publicate = public + ate = v. 公開發佈 Aggregate = ag + gre + ate = adj. 整體的;總計的 / n. 整體;總數 / v. 積聚 Activate = act + ive + ate = v. 發動;啟動 Certificate = cert + ify + ate = n. 證明;證書 WORD LIST Indoctrinate = in + doct + rin + ate = v. 灌輸 Decimate = deci + ate = v. 毀滅;大幅摧毀 Liberate = liber + ate = v. 解放 Motivate = mot + ive + ate = v. 鼓勵;促使 Situate = sit + ate = v. 座落於 EXERCISE TIME 翻譯自己負責的文章部 找兩個-ate的生字(未 份 出現過在今日課堂裡) Words Full of the Colourful, Powerful, Wonderful Variation Suffix -ful STORY TIME + Once upon a time, there was a hopeful young man called Jack. She gave Jack some bread and cheese. Suddenly, the giant's wife said, "My husband is vengeful. He wants to eat you. Hide!" Jack hid in the oven. The giant came home and smelled Jack.
