When writing money in terms of shillings and cents, always start with its value followed by the word shillings or cents. The word N shillings is abbreviated as sh and the word cents is abbreviated as cts. When they are written together, the values in shillings and in cents are separated O by a dot. Example 1 SE (a) How many 50 cents are there in 1 shilling? U (b) Write in short form: sh 500 and 50 cts. Solution E N (a) 100 cts = sh 1 Since 100 cts = 50 cts + 50 cts and LI sh 1 = 100 cts = 50 cts + 50 cts = 2 × 50 cts, it follows that, sh 1 is the same as twice 50 cts.
