THE URINARY SYSTEM Teacher Anna Marie L. Bonsadan LET’S WATCH VIDEO INTRODUCTION Excretion is the process by which the body gets rid of wastes produced by its cells. PARTS & FUNCTION URINARY SYSTEM KIDNEYS Main organs of the urinary system. Bean-shaped organs at the lower parts of the spinal coumn. They filter all the blood in the body about 300 times each day. They clean the blood, remove the waste substances, and ensure that only the useful substances stay in the blood circulation. KIDNEYS Each Kidney has two parts, outer layer called cortex, and the inner layer called medulla. Each Kidney has thousands of filters called nephrons that purify the blood and remove wastes. The filtered blood passes through the renal vein and goes to the heart to be pumped and distributed to the different parts of the body. URETERS Urine flows out from the kidneys to the bladder through the two ureters. The smooth muscles of the ureters move by the peristalsis to transport the urine towards the bladder. BLADDER Hollow muscular organ that acts as temporary storage for urine. During infancy and early childhood, emptying of the urinary bladder is involuntary or automatic. Muscular contraction of the bladder forces the urine out of the body. URETHRA Tube at the bottom of the bladder. The female urethra is about 4 centimeters long, while the male is about 9 centimeters long. The urethra has a sphincter muscle, which serves as a valvelike structure to help regulate the outflow of urine. Urination is the process of eliminating urine. On the average, the urine output may be about 1.4 liters each day. COMMON DISEASES OF THE URINARY SYSTEM UREMIA The accumulation of waste products in the body. The body becomes poisoned by its own wastes. It can cause fatigue, fever, and chills. The activity of the brain cells is slowed, sometimes resulting in coma. NEPHRITIS Inflammation of kidneys, can be acute or chronic. The common cause are strep throat and infections of the skin and ear. Infected person may experience headache and dizziness, as well as swelling of the face around the eyes and in ankles. URINARY TRACT INFECTION Improper washing of the sex organ among females may cause bacteria to enter the urinary tract. When bacteria enter the bladder, they cause the bladder lining become inflamed. Symptoms include frequent urge to urinate in small amounts; pain in urinating; bloodstained; cloudy or foul smelling urine; and pain in the lower abdomen and lower back. FORMATION OF KIDNEY STONES Calcium compounds and waste products containing nitrogen form stones in the kidney. These stones can be 2-3 millimeters and can cause obstruction in the ureter. When the ureter is completely blocked by a large stone , the urine backs up into the kidney.
