Introduction to clinical skills Dr. Mariam Isber In clinical skills students learn the basic skills necessary for interaction with patients through encountering real or simulated patients. These skills include: Interview history taking Physical examination Team work Management and leadership Planning and organization Empathy Time management Taking initiative Adaptability and flexibility Acquiring clinical skills includes three components: Learning how to perform certain movements (procedural knowledge) Why one should do so (underlying basic science knowledge) What the findings might mean (clinical reasoning) Learning Objectives Demonstrate how to conduct an encounter in a patient-centered manner using skills which enhance trust between student and patient. Show competency at taking a complete medical history, including skill in talking to patients about personal issues and psychosocial factors that could have impact on their health and experience of illness. Recognize that relationship-centered interviewing is an evidence- based technique linked to improved diagnosis and treatment outcomes. Establish a Doctor-Patient relationship: medicine’s most powerful therapeutic tool. Reflect on the importance of cultural humility and developing skills that allow the student to communicate with individuals from different population groups. Perform a complete physical examination with sensitivity to the needs of the patient. Demonstrate an understanding of the anatomic and physiologic basis behind physical exam maneuvers. Interpretation of physical exam findings. Utilize probabilities to create a differential diagnosis. Summarize a patient’s case in both written and oral formats, including history, physical, assessment, and plan. Teamwork Communication Ability to clearly explain procedures to patients Actively listen to their concerns. Good and active listener. Focus on what the patient is telling you verbal and non verbal Collaborate and coordinate with other team members Apply theoretical knowledge in a clinical setting Use a familiar language and avoid complex medical terminology.
