Lesson 1 Introduction to “Prayers” What are Prayers? Prayers are a form of “communicatio n” with God. Prayer is “Spending time”with God. They can be used to seek comfort, to express gratitude, to ask for guidance, or to request assistance. “Prayer is the raising of one’s mind and heart to God or the requesting of good things from God” CCC 2590 2 types of Prayer Formal and Informal Formal Prayer -are based on traditions and teachings. Example: Apostle’s Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Hail Mary Informal Prayer -are based on experiences and moments in our life. Example: We pray through our own desire in short “OWN PRAYER” To whom do we Pray? Jesus Christ/God In the Christian tradition, prayer is primarily directed to “God” Let us always remember that: 1.Prayer is use to communicate with God. 2.When we pray we spend time with Him. Lord, “please” hear my prayer to You, I am “requesting” to always keep me safe from harm, “may” You also guide me and my classmates from going home, “please” give me delicious food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Pointing Finger: pray for those who guide us: teachers, doctors, counselors, mentors. Middle Finger(tallest one): pray for those who lead us: government, police, firefighters, “Kuya/Lady Guard” Ring Finger(weakest one): pray for those who are weak: the poor, sick, disabled, infants, homeless, the powerless, the persecuted. Pinkie(the smallest, the least): pray for myself. It seeks forgiveness and extends it to others (And forgive us our trespasses…) It asks for guidance and protection (And lead us not into temptation… Why is it called “Oratio Dominica”? It is the Latin form of “Our Father” It means “Our Father” It is taught by our Lord Jesus Christ Hail Mary It is a Christian Prayer It became our devotional prayer in the Catholic Church It came from the Gospel of Luke Angel Gabriel visited Mary and greets her (Luke 1:28) Doxology (Glory Be) It is a short hymn or praise in the Christian tradition It is used to give glory to the Holy Trinity, and to express the eternal nature of God Act of Contrition It is a prayer that expresses sorrows for our sins It has different versions It seeks forgiveness to God Apostle’s Creed It is the statement of the Christian faith that is traditionally attributed to the Apostles, although it was not written by them It is the summary of the foundational beliefs of Christianity It covers the Holy Trinity, the Life and works of Jesus, the Church and the afterlife Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father I almighty, creater of Heaven and Earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit Apostle’s Creed I And born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered death under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to Hell. On the third day He rose again from the dead Apostle’s Creed I He ascended into Heaven and is seated on the right hand of the Father. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. Apostle’s Creed I I believe in the Holy Spirit , The Holy Catholic Church, The Communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. Do we worship them? (Mary and the saints) - Worshiping statues and idols are clearly blasphemous and a sin from God. - We “DO NOT” worship them hence we “VENERATE” them because of the good things that they have done while they were still alive.
