EXOGENIC PROCESSES The exogenic processes obtain their energy from the gradients generated by tectonic factors, processes, their corresponding driving forces and atmosphere determined by the energy from the sun. Precipitation and temperature are the two significant climatic components that regulate different processes. Whole exogenic geomorphic processes are covered under a common term, denudation which means to uncover. Weathering, transportation, and erosion are comprised of denudation. Gravitational force acts upon every material on earth having a sloping surface and incline to create the movement of matter in downward slope direction. EXOGENIC PROCESSES Also called Gradational Processes, they comprise degradation and aggradation – they modify relief → a continuum of processes – Weathering → Mass Wasting → Erosion → Transportation → Deposition → these processes are carried through by Geomorphic Agents: gravity, flowing water (rivers), moving ice (glaciers), waves and tides (oceans and lakes), wind,plants, organisms, animals and humans EXOGENIC PROCESSES Degradation Processes → Also called Denudation Processes Weathering , Mass Wasting, Erosion and Transportation Aggradation Processes Deposition – fluvial, eolian, glacial, coastal EXOGENIC PROCESSES Degradation Processes degradation refers to the lowering of a riverbed, due the removal of sediment Aggradation Processes Aggradation is the process by which sediment is built up over time in a river or similar environment. ENDOGENIC PROCESSES processes are driven by the internal heat of the Earth, which in turn results from the radioactive decay of elements deep beneath the surface. This heat bubbles upward providing a huge driving force that bends, cracks, lifts, and moves Earth's rigid outer layer. Occasionally we see this rising energy empty directly onto the surface in molten lava. ENDOGENIC PROCESSES Main energy - Energy emanating from within the earth Generated from – radioactivity, rotational and tidal friction and primordial heat Geothermal gradients and heatflow Not uniform ENDOGENIC PROCESSES Diastrophism – All processes that move, elevate, or build up portions of the earth’s crust DIASTROPHISM Orogenic – process of mountain building through severe folding and affecting long and narrow belts of the earth’s crust Continental-size mountain systems that develop along an entire continental margin as a result of the convergence and accretion of two or more tectonic plates DIASTROPHISM Epeirogenic – processes involving uplift or warping of large parts of the earth’s crust Continental building process DIASTROPHISM Earthquakes – involving local relatively minor movements DIASTROPHISM Plate Tectonics – involving horizontal movements of crustal plates ENDOGENIC PROCESSES Volcanism – includes the movement of molten rock (magma) onto or toward the earth’s surface and also formation of many intrusive and extrusive volcanic forms
