LESSON 1. HISTORY. MEANING History is for accounts of phenomenon, especially human affairs in chronological order. Two theories: factual or speculative Factual history. Historiography is a traditional method in doing historical research that focus on gathering of documents from different libraries and archives to form a pool of evidence. LESSON 1. HISTORY. MEANING The limitation of historical knowledge. The incompleteness of records has limited man’s knowledge of history. Most human affairs happen without leaving any evidence or records of any kind, no artifacts, or if there are, no further evidence. LESSON 1. HISTORY. SEATWORK 1. A. (1) Magellan’s voyage was undertaken to find a western sea route to the Spice Islands, which were then controlled by Portugal. (2) Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, led the expedition known as the Magellan-Elcano expedition. Magellan was born around 1480 in Portugal and became a seasoned sailor and explorer. (3) The voyage began in Seville, Spain, with five ships: the Trinidad, San Antonio, Concepción, Victoria, and Santiago and continued through the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, around the southern tip of South America, across the Pacific to the Philippines, and back to Spain. (4) The journey spanned several years, and Magellan himself did not survive the entire trip. He was killed in the Philippines in 1521 in the Battle of Mactan. The expedition, under the command of Juan Sebastián Elcano, continued and ultimately completed the circumnavigation on September 6, 1522. (5) After Magellan’s death in the Philippines, the remaining ships, namely the Trinidad and the Victoria, sailed across the Indian Ocean, rounded the Cape of Good Hope, and finally returned to Spain, completing the first circumnavigation of the Earth.
