CONCEPTS AND TECHNIQUES Building design as an iconic system of transformation AR. EDGIN MANAPOL, 2025 SIGN A mark or figure having conventional meaning and used in place of a word or phrase or express a complex notion ICON A manifestation of design An image or figure A sign which refers to the object that denotes merely by virtue of characteristics of its own the drawing of an icon is similar to the shape of the object depicted and is thus instantly recognizable SYMBOL A representation of design Something that stands for or represents something by association, resemblance or Convention SYMBOL A sign which refers to the object that it denotes by virtue of a law, usually an association of general ideas, which operates to cause the symbol to be interpreted Symbols, have no visible resemblance of the object at all. Their meaning has to be learned. PRAGMATIC DESIGN (practical) Available materials are used such as earth, stone, tree trunks, leaves, reeds, bamboos, animal skin are put together initially by trial and error, a building form was achieved and actually worked TYPOLOGIC DESIGN (typology) Members of a particular culture share a fix mental image of what the design form should be Materials in particular place and particular climate To house an established lifestyle ANALOGIC DESIGN (analogy) Drawing of analogies, usually visual into the solution of one’s design problem with existing buildings with Form of nature, paintings, etc. CANONIC DESIGN (standard/ general principle) Form is generated by some two or more three dimensional geometric forms, originated by Egyptians Philosophical stiffening of the Greeks Utilized design of Gothic and Renaissance palaces VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE based on the forms and materials of particular historical period, region, group of people ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE architectural design philosophy in early 20th century The BUILDING - should have a structure and plan thatfulfills its functional requirements - should harmonize with natural environment - shapes or forms often irregular and seem to resemble or suggest forms found in nature FUNCTIONALISM architectural design movement in early 20th century The BUILDING - direct fulfillment of its functional requirements - construction materials and purpose clearly expressed - aesthetic effect derived chiefly from proportions and finish excluding purely decorative effects CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE a broad term referring to the architecture of the present day a range of styles of recently built structures and space which are optimized for current use
