The birth of Samuel is around 1105 B.C. and the end of David’s reign as king is around 970 B.C. Timeline of Samuel Samuel’s Childhood 1-3 • Hannah was barren. • Pours her heart out to the Lord for a son and God answers her prayer with the birth of Samuel. • Out of gratefulness, Hannah dedicates Samuel to the Lord, and he goes to live with Eli the priest. • During Samuel’s childhood (days in which “the word of the LORD was rare), God calls on Samuel and tells him about the house of Eli. • “The Lord was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of his words fall to the ground. Introduction to Saul: Israel’s First King • Characteristics: – A Benjamite (small tribe) – From a family of standing – “An impressive young man without equal among the Israelites-a head taller than any of the others.” Samuel anoints him, receives special gifts (prophesies) 10:9-11 Saul’s Early Profile • Read 10:9-27 – Receives spirit of God (9-13) – Withholds part of story about Samuel from his uncle. (Why?) – Samuel recalls God’s faithfulness , and reluctantly agrees to give Israel what they ask for, a king. (17-19) – In front of the great gathering, they look for Saul and he’s hiding behind the baggage. (20-22) – The people celebrate Saul, his appearance, and chant “Long live the king.” (23-24) – Samuel explains the Kings duties and dismisses people. People confirm. – Recalls Lord’s historic faithfulness to the people, despite their lack of faithfulness. – Asking for a king was an evil thing – Now, serve the Lord. You and your king. Your wellbeing depends on it. The Beginning of Saul’s Kingship • Age 30 when he becomes kings, reigns 42 years. • Early success: Leads Israel over the Ammonites. People celebrate and “reaffirm the kingship.” • Samuel rebukes Saul for taking action against the Philistines without waiting on him. Read 1 Sam 13:13-14 • Jonathan (son of Saul) arises as a mighty faithful warrior. • Saul makes a foolish vow about eating honey, but the people rally behind Jonathan. • God is displeased with Saul, his disobedience to his instructions and his self-glorification and rejects him as king. Introduction to David • Samuel anoints David: The youngest of Jesse: 1 Samuel 16:6-7 When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, “Surely the LORD’S anointed stands here before the LORD.” But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” • Plays harp for Saul who is tormented with evil spirits. • David vs. Goliath, the Philistine giant.
