# Cells of the Immune System The document describes the components of the immune system. ## PMNS (Polymorphonuclear Leukocytes) * **Definition:** A type of white blood cell (WBC). * **Function:** Consist of protein molecules found in the blood stream and tissues. They activate each other in a cascade, leading to the lysis of foreign and infected cells. They also engulf foreign particles and cell debris, and promote inflammation. ## Lectin Pathway * **Definition:** A group of protein molecules that circulate in blood and tissue, activating each other in a cascade. * **Result:** Lysis of foreign and infected cells, phagocytosis of foreign particles, and inflammation of surrounding tissues. ## Granulocytes (Examples: neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, and mast cells) * **Definition:** A type of white blood cell (WBC). * **Function:** Play a major role in the innate immune system, protecting the body from infectious organisms.. * **Other Information:** Also known as granulocytes. ## Worksheet 2: Cells of the Immune System (Table) | Cell | Type | White blood cell (Y/N) | Derived from | Differentiate into/ also known as: | Innate or Adaptive immune system | Functions | Main targets | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | | | | | | | | | **Note:** The table is incomplete.
