JH2224 Evolution of Digital Art Tools Art as a discipline is an ever-evolving process and way of thinking. It provides us with visual stimulation with varying facets, such as inducing nostalgia, challenging our perspectives, and giving comfort, to name a few. As a tool, its techniques are constantly changing depending on the changes its tools are undergoing. From simple tools such as burnt ash and wet clay to the well-known muslin and acrylic colors, art styles and media change as technology advances. As mentioned in the previous quarter, digital art surfaced when modern technology stepped into the limelight. With this, more and more people began to casualize art styles that were once considered professional work. Painted portraits were slowly replaced with accessible camera photographs, mass- producing printing presses superseded handmade books, and theater is now contending with modern cinema. Now, digital art slowly dominates the casual art scene. Prominent Pioneers Various people have dabbled with digital art. Even then, digital art is not yet known as such. Shown below are some prominent figures behind the rise of this art form. NAME PROMINENT YEAR CONTRIBUTION A British artist credited as AARON's creator. Harold Cohen 1968 AARON is a series of computer programs that can create original artistic images. A German mathematician was credited for being the “Father of Digital Art” due to his Frieder Nake The 1960s computer-generated artworks employing mathematical algorithms. A collaboration between an American Leon Harmon researcher (Harmon) who worked at Bell Telephone Laboratories and an American 1966 graphic artist (Knowlton) led to the creation of Kenneth C. Knowlton the photomosaic, a series of smaller images that creates a larger picture. An American artist is best remembered for pioneering interactive art, which he called Allan Kaprow 1969 “Happenings”. One (1) of his happenings, “Hello,” used telecommunications to ensnare the audience into this interactive art. A Palestinian artist, she is one (1) of the most prominent digital artists who explore themes of Mona Hatoum 1992 confinement, displacement, conflict, and home. An English artist, she employs installation art Rachel Whiteread 1993 and photography to create bold artworks, which led to her winning an award in 1993. As such, it employs modern tools to deliver quality artwork. The majority of digital artworks are made from computer software that enables image editing and manipulation, as shown below. PAID SOFTWARE is software that requires routine payment (either monthly or annual) or full purchase to utilize its myriad of editing tools. They sometimes include a limited trial offer to use the software. SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION CorelDRAW is a vector graphics editing software owned by Alludo (formerly Corel Corporation). It is commonly used in professional settings, CorelDRAW such as graphic studios and creative services. It allows traditional hand- drawn art styles and photo editing with several templates and multiple- format compatibility. Adobe Photoshop is a raster graphics editing software owned by Adobe. It is the most well-known image editing software, to the point that its brand Adobe Photoshop name is verbed and is synonymous with “edited” and “fake.” It is used in almost every image design, such as photography, digital sketching, and layout. Paint Tool SAI is a lightweight raster graphics editing software for Microsoft Windows. It focuses mainly on digital painting, particularly on Paint Tool SAI easy color mixing. It has the same tools as the other two (2), but the ease of color generation and mixing sets this apart from the rest. FREE SOFTWARE, also known as Freeware, is software that allows the user to use the majority of its tools free of charge, with additional content relegated as a membership bonus, which requires routine payment (either monthly or annual). SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION The most widely recognized image editing software. It utilizes Bezier curves to create smooth circles and curved lines, but it is not a vector MS Paint graphic editing software. It always comes exclusively in Microsoft Windows. Another famous image editing software comes exclusively in Apple MacPaint operating system. Unfortunately, this software did not get much footing compared to MS Paint and was soon discontinued. An Australian free-to-use image editing application primarily focuses on graphic designs for social media, presentations, and posters, to name a Canva few. It relies on monthly subscriptions to unlock more “professional” features. However, it becomes free when used in educational settings. Ola Sevandersson, a Swedish developer, made a cloud-based set of imaging tools on this platform. It was acquired in 2011 by Autodesk, which Pixlr also developed the famous drafting platform AutoCAD. It is usually free to use, but it also comes in paid subscriptions in Premium and Creative packs. 04 Handout 1 *Property of STI Page 2 of 6
