The origin of the word seminar is derived from the Latin word seminarium meaning “seed plot” breeding ground, plant nursery. Cambridge English Dictionary defines a seminar as: “An occasion when a teacher or expert and a group of people meet to study and discuss something” The word seminar is derived from the Latin word seminarium meaning “seed plot”. What is a seminar? Seminar, used as a teaching method in higher education, is an exchange of ideas in some areas guided by discussion of concepts. It is an instructional technique that involves paper reading on a theme—usually following formal lectures. It is often lectures in the form of a paper presentation on a theme, followed by a group discussion to clarify the complex aspects of the theme. A seminar is a type of group discussion focusing on problem-solving, using a small group of students and a teacher who is an expert in the field of the study. What is group discussion in seminar? It is a structured conversation involving a group of individuals, usually between 6 to 15 participants, who gather to discuss a specific topic or problem.
