CST8118 Computer Essentials Week 13 Microsoft Excel Visualizations Week 13 Microsoft Excel Visualizations (Charts) What are Visualizations? What is needed first, before creating a chart? What are some commonly used Chart Types? What is a Column Chart? What is a Histogram? What is a Pie Chart? What is a Scatter Plot? How do I create a chart? 2 Welcome This presentation will provide a basic introduction and overview of some charts that can be generated in Microsoft Excel. Note that this slide set follows from , please see this resource for more detailed coverage of Microsoft Excel Charts. 3 What are Visualizations? Microsoft Excel has the functionality of generating visual representations of data. The most common visualization is called a Chart. 4 What is needed first, before creating a chart? You need numerical data, typically stored within your worksheet. The data items are stored in cells and are used to draw the chart. Note that charts update automatically if the data they depict changes. 5 What are some commonly used Chart Types? Some commonly used Chart Types are: Column Chart Histogram Pie Chart Scatter Plot Microsoft Excel supports many more chart types, refer to the learning resources to explore and learn more. 6 What is a Column Chart? This chart visualizes data as vertical or horizontal bars. It is a good choice to compare numeric values of categorized data. This chart type is also called a Bar Chart. 7 What is a Histogram? It is like a Column Chart using bars. Values are aggregated into bins (ranges) rather than categorized. Example purpose: Can check if the data follows a normal distribution (statistics e.g. bell curve) Normal distributions are outside the scope of our course. If interested see the recommended resources for more information. 8 What is a Pie Chart? A Pie Chart is a circle which is divided into triangular pie (or pizza) slices. Each slice of the pie represents a percentage or portion of a whole. This chart is a good choice to compare results e.g., from a survey. However, if there are too many categories the slices become small and hard to read. 9 What is a Scatter Plot? A scatterplot is a chart that uses two numbered axis, x and y, and places dots where two values intersect. This type of chart can be used to look for trends in data and to make predictions (correlation). A trend line can be added to a scatterplot to provide additional insight into how strongly related the variables are. See , for instructions on adding axis labels to a scatter plot. 10 How do I create a chart? Select the data you will use for the chart Use the Insert tab in the Ribbon In the charts area, view recommended charts or Select the chart you would like. Your chart will be selected, and the Ribbon will have two new tabs: “Chart Design” and “Chart Format”. You can also right-click on the chart, as well as chart elements, to customize further. Please see the recommended learning resources to learn more. 11 In Class Activity Using the starter files provided create each of the chart types below.
