  • He trained as a lawyer and began practicing in India in 1891 but was unsuccessful.
  • In 1915, Gandhi returned to India and began leading protests against British rule.
  • In 1921, he became the leader of the Indian National Congress, a nationwide organization of Indian nationalists.
  • Gandhi led campaigns for economic and social reform, including ending discrimination and poverty, and for self-rule for India.
  • In 1930, he led a march of Indian protesters to challenge a British-imposed salt tax.
  • In 1942, Gandhi led a campaign for British withdrawal from India.
  • In 1947, independence was granted to India, and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into India and Pakistan.
  • Gandhi did not celebrate independence, instead visiting areas affected by the partition.
  • Following the partition, Gandhi undertook several hunger strikes to stop religious violence.
  • Gandhi died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 80.
