Character
- A person, or sometimes an animal, who takes part in the action of a story
- Authors can describe characters' physical appearance, actions, words, inner thoughts, and how other characters perceive them
Setting
- The time and place where a story occurs
- Authors typically use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons, or weather to create a strong sense of setting
Conflict
- Any problem a character encounters in a story
- A struggle between two people or things
- Can be:
- External: Conflict with others or nature
- Internal: Conflict within oneself
- The main character may struggle:
- Against another important character
- Against the forces of nature
- Against society
- Against something within themselves (feelings, emotions, illness)
Theme
- A universal idea, lesson, or message explored throughout a work of literature
- Can be expressed as a general statement about people or life
- The meaning behind events and characters' actions in a story
- Not the central idea or a plot summary
- Can be stated directly (explicit) or indirectly (implicit) by the author, usually indirectly
Plot
- A pattern (series) of events that develop from the interactions between characters
- A series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict
- Has 5 elements:
- Exposition
- Rising Action
- Climax
- Falling Action
- Resolution
