Year 7 Maths: Fractions and Operations
Fractions Basics
- A fraction represents part of a whole, consisting of a numerator (top number) and a denominator (bottom number)
- Fractions can be used to show proportions, ratios, and divisions of quantities
Operations with Fractions
- Addition and Subtraction: Fractions with the same denominator can be added or subtracted by adding or subtracting the numerators
- Multiplication: Multiply numerators together and denominators together to get the product
- Division: Reciprocal the second fraction (invert and change the operation to multiplication)
Ordering Fractions
- Compare fractions by converting them to equivalent decimals or by using a common denominator
- Arrange fractions in order from smallest to largest or largest to smallest
Equivalence and Conversion
- Equivalent Fractions: Fractions with the same value but different numerators and denominators, e.g., 1/2 = 2/4 = 3/6
- Converting Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers: Divide numerator by denominator to get the whole number part and remainder as the new numerator
- Converting Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions: Multiply the denominator by the whole number part and add the numerator
