The Sermon on the Mount

  • Jesus saw the multitudes and went up to a mountain to teach his disciples.

The Beatitudes

  • Blessed are the poor in spirit, for they will inherit the kingdom of heaven.
  • Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
  • Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
  • Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.
  • Blessed are the merciful, for they will obtain mercy.
  • Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
  • Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God.
  • Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The Influence of Disciples

  • Disciples are the salt of the earth, but if they lose their flavor, they are good for nothing.
  • Disciples are the light of the world, and they should let their light shine before others.
  • They should not hide their good works, but should let them be seen by others.

Fulfilling the Law

  • Whoever divorces their wife, except for fornication, causes her to commit adultery.
  • Whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
  • One should not swear oaths, but instead let their communication be simple and truthful.

Retaliation and Love

  • One should not resist evil, but instead turn the other cheek and go the extra mile.
  • One should give to those who ask and pray for those who persecute them.
  • One should love their enemies, bless those who curse them, and do good to those who hate them.

Perfection

  • One should strive to be perfect, like their Father in heaven is perfect.
