Study Notes

The Unitary Method is a technique used to solve mathematical problems by first finding the value of a single unit and then multiplying that unit value by the number of units desired. It is particularly useful for calculating ratios and missing values in problems involving rates, such as speed, distance, and time. The method involves three main subtopics: partial variation, direct variation, and joint variation.

Partial Variation

In partial variation, we find the value of a single unit by dividing the total value of multiple units by the number of units. For example, if 20 mangoes cost $27, we can find the cost of 1 mango by dividing $27 by 20, which gives us $1.35 per mango. This value can then be used to find the cost of any number of mangoes.

Direct Variation

Direct variation is a relationship between two quantities where one quantity is directly proportional to the other. In other words, if one quantity increases, the other quantity increases at the same rate. For example, if a car travels 40 km per hour, we can find the time it takes to travel 7 km by dividing 7 km by 40 km/hour, which gives us 0.175 hours. This value can then be converted to minutes to find the time in minutes.

Joint Variation

Joint variation is a relationship between two or more quantities where the ratio of one quantity to another is constant. For example, if a car covers 150 km with 15 liters of fuel, we can find the distance covered with 10 liters of fuel by multiplying 15 liters by the ratio of 150 km/15 liters, which gives us 100 km. This value can then be used to find the distance covered with any number of liters of fuel.

The unitary method is useful in various situations, including calculating the cost of materials, determining the time taken to cover a certain distance, and evaluating the price of goods. It can also be applied to problems related to speed, distance, and time, as well as to problems involving calculating the cost of materials.
