Study Notes

  • The Community Engagement and Public Education Programs provide instruction on fire safety to the public.
  • The Fire Safety Education Unit provides lesson plans for use in visits to the firehouse.
  • Firehouse visits are not to be scheduled during BISP periods, hydrant inspections, scheduled training activities, or any other period designated by the Chief of Operations.
  • If a street sign is missing, the unit should report the missing sign by mail or fax to Assistant Chief of Design and Construction.
  • The Buckeye Pipeline has two types of valves - manual shut-off valves and pressure gauges.
  • Manual shut-off valves are located below ground, in valve housings, and are typically opened with a wrench.
  • The cover of a manual shut-off valve is opened by inserting a wrench into a latching device and turning it a quarter turn left or right.
  • The cover of a pressure gauge is opened by depressing a button.
  • Each valve box has a female fitting and a male square fitting, and the wrench with a female fitting is inserted into the valve box onto the male square fitting and turned clockwise to shut off the valve
  • The only exception is the valves located on the shipper's lines extending from the Long Island City terminal which require 24 full turns (48 half turns) clockwise
  • Pipeline profile cards showing the elevation of valves above sea level and the amount of product carried in barrels between each valve have been issued to all Assigned units and Alternate units
  • Each Unit Alarm Assignment Card has five lines and units on the first line are designated Assigned Units, except for those under the caption Special Units
  • The box on the first line entitled Chiefs is for assigned battalion and deputy chiefs
  • The box under the heading Covering/Relocating Units is used only for Foam and Satellite units
  • The box labeled Ladders is not used, and the box for Covering Chiefs is self explanatory
  • The second line is used for special unit assignments which cannot fit on the first line
  • Units on the third, fourth, and fifth lines are designated alternate units
