10 Questions
Who invented the radiographic grid?
Dr. Gustave Bucky in 1913
What is the purpose of a radiographic grid?
To remove scattered radiation and increase image contrast
Why are patient exposures higher with aluminum interspace grids?
Because aluminum absorbs more primary radiation
What material are the interspaces of the grid typically made of?
Aluminum or other organic compounds
What does scatter radiation contribute to the film image?
A constant background fog and increased noise
What are the two ways of obtaining a digital x-ray?
- Computed radiography 2. Direct/indirect digital radiography
What is the process of computed radiography?
Capturing radiographic data from a conventional x-ray machine and processing the data digitally to produce a crisp and high-quality image
What is the imaging plate made of in computed radiography?
A screen using a photostimulabe phosphor
What is the special property of photostimulable phosphor in computed radiography?
Storing X-ray energy in the latent form and releasing the same when stimulated by a laser energy in the CR reader/digitizer
What is unique about storage phosphor in computed radiography?
They respond to a wide range of X-ray exposures regardless of the exposure, and the image can be displayed correctly
Study Notes
Radiographic Grid
- Invented by Dr. Gustave Bucky
- Purpose: to absorb scattered radiation and improve image contrast and resolution
Radiographic Grid Characteristics
- Patient exposures are higher with aluminum interspace grids due to increased absorption of radiation
Grid Interspaces
- Typically made of aluminum or fiber materials
Scatter Radiation
- Contributes to image degradation and loss of contrast on the film image
Digital X-ray
- Two ways to obtain:
- Computed radiography (CR)
- Digital radiography (DR)
Computed Radiography (CR)
- Process: x-ray exposed imaging plate is scanned by a laser, and the stored latent image is read out
Imaging Plate
- Made of photostimulable phosphor (PSP)
- Storage phosphor has the unique property of being able to store a latent image until stimulated by a laser
Photostimulable Phosphor (PSP)
- Special property: emits light when stimulated by a laser, which is then measured to form a digital image
