Writing Process Steps
- Writing involves more than just putting words together
- Good writers use a process of steps
- The writing process has six key steps
Pre-writing
- Step 1: Choose a topic. Select a topic from a provided assignment or generate your own.
- Step 2: Gather ideas. Brainstorm ideas related to the chosen topic.
- Step 3: Organize ideas. Determine the order and placement of ideas in your writing. Decide which idea to start, continue, and end with.
Drafting
- Step 4: Write. Create a first draft from start to finish. Use notes and organization for guidance.
Reviewing and Revising
- Step 5: Review structure and content. Read your writing carefully, look for areas to add or remove information, get feedback from peers.
- Step 6: Rewrite structure and content. Use ideas from review to rewrite and clarify your text. Add detail where necessary. Edit and improve the writing process. Editing includes re-organizing, adding detail, and clarifying.
Proofreading and Finalizing
- Proofread. Check for spelling and grammar, review word choices and tone.
- Final corrections. Make sure all errors from the previous steps are corrected and any additional changes to enhance clarity are implemented.
- Repeat: Steps 5 & 6 can be repeated many times.
