World Wars: A Historical Overview
A brief summary of the major global conflicts known as the World Wars provides context and insight into the tumultuous twentieth century. These two catastrophic events shaped much of history during this time frame:
World War I
The first World War, also referred to as the Great War, started on July 28, 1914, and ended on November 11, 1918. This war primarily involved European powers, including Germany, France, Britain, and Austria-Hungary. Initiated by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by the Bosnian nationalist Gavrilo Princip and subsequent actions taken by various countries involved in the complex alliance system of the time, World War I resulted in significant casualties, with an estimated eight million military personnel killed and over seven million civilians dying from war-related causes. This conflict also led to the emergence of new powers on the international stage and changes that would shape the course of history for decades to come.
World War II
World War II began on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, and ended with the unconditional surrender of the major European Axis powers by May 8, 1945. This war was even more devastating than its predecessor, encompassing various fronts worldwide and leading to the deaths of an estimated 60 million people. Notable events from this period include the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which pulled the United States into the war; the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942-1943, considered one of the most significant battles in human history due to its impact on morale and strategic decision-making; and the development and use of atomic bombs against Japan by the U.S. in August 1945. The aftermath of World War II saw significant shifts in global power dynamics and the establishment of new patterns of international relations.
