Study Notes
World War II was a global conflict that erupted in September of 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. It lasted until September of 1945 after the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the United States. This war also involved many other nations including Britain, France, Italy, Russia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Burma, Ceylon, Malaya, Hong Kong, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, and Bali. Some of these countries were under British rule while others had different colonial rulers.
One significant cause of this world war was Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Nazi Germany. After gaining control over most of Europe, he started planning how to take over the rest of the continent. He wanted to conquer Britain first so that it couldn't interfere with his plans for domination. Another important cause was Mussolini who was fascist leader of Italy. He made an agreement with German dictator Hitler called the Rome-Berlin Axis which shared information between them. There were other reasons too such as economic depression and differences among some European powers.
The war began with three main battles: Battle of Dunkirk from May 26th to June 4th, Battle of Narvik from April 9th to June 7th, and Battle of Tobruk from March 1st to December 3rd. These battles were fought mostly in Europe and North America. Two more famous battles took place later during the war: Battle of Stalingrad from July 17th, 1942 to February 2nd, 1943 and Battle of Kursk from July 5th to 20th, 1943. Other notable events during WWII included the creation of the United Nations at the end of the war and the dropping of two nuclear bombs by the US on Japan.
Hitler played an important role throughout the war. He led Germany into the conflict and stayed there until the surrender order arrived on May 8th, 1945. During the war, millions of people died including soldiers and civilians. The number of civilian deaths is estimated to have been around 20 million while military death toll reached nearly 37 million. Many cities suffered heavy damage due to frequent bombings during the war. Even though civilians tried hard to defend their land against invasion, they often lost because of superior enemy forces.
In conclusion, World War II was one of the greatest conflicts in history. Although it led to destruction, it also brought freedom to many oppressed countries and helped establish peace worldwide. With its various causes, exciting battles, important leaders, and disastrous effects, World War II remains a significant event in human history.
