Study Notes

Performance Tests

  • Designed to measure job-related skills by having applicants perform a task under controlled conditions
  • Examples: automotive mechanic fixing a torn fan belt, secretarial applicant typing a letter, truck-driver backing a truck up to a loading dock
  • Advantages: directly related to the job, predictive of actual performance, less challenged in courts
  • Disadvantages: expensive to construct and administer

Assessment Centers

  • Use multiple assessment methods to observe applicants performing stimulated job tasks
  • Measures job performance, commonly used for managerial or white-collar jobs
  • Exercises include in-basket technique, simulation, work samples, leaderless group discussions, structured interviews, personality and ability tests, and business games
  • Assessors hold positions two levels higher than the assessed and spend one day being trained

Assessment Center Exercises

  • In-basket Exercise: applicants respond to items in an in-basket as if on the first day of a new job
  • Leaderless Group Exercise: applicants work together to solve a problem without a leader
  • Problem-Solving Simulation: applicants come up with a solution to a problem, potentially producing a report
  • Role-Play Exercise: applicants pretend to be in a specific organizational role, handling a problem or situation
  • Business Games: exercises demonstrating creativity, decision-making, and teamwork

Ability Tests

  • Tap the extent to which an applicant can learn or perform a job-related skill
  • Advantages: efficient, inexpensive, shows differences among incumbents, easy to quantify and analyze statistically
  • Disadvantages: ignores job context, limits respondents to asked questions, requires job knowledge to design questionnaire, easy for job incumbents to distort

Job Analysis Methods

  • Job Components Inventory (JCI): developed in Great Britain to match job requirements to worker characteristics
  • Functional Job Analysis (FJA): job incumbents generate incidents of excellent and poor performance, examined by job experts
  • O*NET: a computer-based resource for job-related information on approximately 1,000 groups of jobs sharing common characteristics

This quiz assesses the job-related skills of an applicant by giving them a task to perform under controlled conditions. It measures their ability to complete a task similar to those required in the job. Examples include assembling a motor, typing a letter, or backing a truck up to a loading dock.
