Monosyllabic Words

  • Words with one syllable
  • Examples: dog, sun, hat

Disyllabic Words

  • Words with two syllables
  • Examples: running, happy, pocket

Polysyllabic Words

  • Words with three or more syllables
  • Examples: banana, communication, celebration

Syllable Count Rules

  • A single vowel sound is usually one syllable
  • A diphthong (combination of two vowel sounds) is usually one syllable
  • A consonant between two vowels usually divides the syllables
  • A prefix or suffix usually doesn't change the syllable count
