- Word classes, also known as parts of speech, have eight categories
- Nouns: name persons, places, things, or ideas
- Verbs: show actions or states of being

- Pronouns: replace nouns
- Prepositions: show relationships between words
- Conjunctions: connect words or groups of words
- Interjections/Exclamations: express strong emotion
Nouns
- Common nouns refer to general classes of people, places, or things
- Proper nouns name specific people, places, or things, and are always capitalized
- Examples: student, university, computer, Mahathir Mohamad, Cyberjaya, National Stadium
Pronouns
- Pronouns are used to replace nouns
- Example: As Mohan began to take his computer test, he tried to ignore the beeping sound coming from a cellular phone behind him.
Verbs
- Verbs express actions or states of being
- Examples include: Aqilah paints, Neil Armstrong landed, Marijuana is criminalised
- Helping verbs are auxiliary verbs that help to form verb tenses
- Examples include: "be” verbs (am, is, are, was, were), "have” verbs (has, have, had), "do” verbs (does, do, did), and modal verbs (can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must)
Adjectives
- Adjectives modify nouns or pronouns

Adverbs
- Adverbs describe or modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs

- Conjunctions connect words or groups of words
- Coordinating conjunctions connect words or phrases of equal rank
- Examples: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
- Correlative conjunctions connect pairs of words or phrases
- Examples: both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also
- Subordinating conjunctions connect dependent clauses to independent clauses
- Examples: after, as, because, before, if, once, since, until, when, while, as if, although, despite, even if, even though, though, whenever, unless
Interjections/Exclamations
- Interjections/Exclamations express strong emotion
- Examples: Wow!, Ouch!, Help!
Subject-Verb Agreement (SVA)

- Examples: A student reads; Students read
